Elizabeth Crawford

Clarinetist Elizabeth Crawford is Emerita Professor of Music Performance at Ball State University, where she taught for 16 years. An avid proponent of music for E-flat clarinet, Elizabeth has recorded two CDs solely for the instrument, which include her 8 commissioned works. The first, entitled Instant Winners, showcases American music, and was released on the Albany Records label in 2018. Instant Winners, Vol. II followed in March 2022 and highlights E-flat music by 10 composers from throughout the world. While promoting new music has always been important, Elizabeth believes it is vital to educate the clarinet community about some of the lesser-known works by 19th-century composers. Giuseppe Cappelli’s five operatic fantasies for E-flat clarinet and piano are published by Potenza music and are an excellent foray into this genre. Her editions of Cappelli’s four pieces for B-flat clarinet and piano are available from BRS Music in Indianapolis.

In 2020, Elizabeth was the recipient of a Fulbright Award to teach at the Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa, Portugal. After a one-year delay due to Covid-19, she was able to complete the award in spring 2022.

Elizabeth was the 2021 recipient of the Dean’s Creative Endeavor Award of the College of Fine Arts at Ball State for her research on the E-flat clarinet. Her students have won scholarships to attend graduate programs at CCM, DePaul, UMKC, the University of Texas, and others.

A registered yoga teacher, she received her 500-hour training certificate in 2020. Elizabeth is also a Bridge Ruby Life Master and enjoys hiking in parks throughout the world. She recently completed the 100-mile West Highland Way, in Scotland.
