Lon Chaffin

Lon Chaffin is an educator, administrator, lecturer, and graphic designer, as well as an award-winning composer and author. He has served as a college choral director, voice instructor, and theory teacher for thirty years. Along with his compositions for winds, he has composed numerous choral works and written and directed several musical theater productions. His latest one-act opera entitled “Grant and Grace” was recently performed by the Boston Metro Opera. One of his choral pieces, “Burst Into Jubilant Song,” was just selected and performed as part of the “New Voices” vocal/choral festival in Washington, D.C. Many other works have been performed across the country at major universities, conventions, and various performance venues. As a speaker, he has given lecture/presentations on electronic music, music theatre, integrating the music curriculum, and the math of music theory.

Dr. Chaffin holds a Bachelor of Music from Wayland Baptist University in Church Music and Composition. His Masters is in Music Theory and Composition from Texas Tech University. He also received a Ph.D. in Fine Arts from Texas Tech with an emphasis in Composition. While at Texas Tech, he studied composition and theory with Mary Jeanne van Appledorn. He currently serves at New Mexico State University as Chairman of the Music Department.
