Description
The Red Wheelbarrow holds the title of this work and serves as the first song in a song cycle based on some of my favorite, but unrelated, poems. Each of the poems was chosen for the simple reason of my admiration for the work of each of these individuals. The choice of the instruments used, a quasi- “Pierrot” ensemble with some variation, is influenced by the chamber music of Arnold Schoenberg. In each movement the instrumentation changes slightly to fit the mood of the poem most effectively. The entire ensemble only plays on the first and last movements, providing a type of arch shape with the instrumentation.
