“Often cited as the father of Russian classical music, Glinka was certainly the first Russian composer to gain recognition within his own country, although the majority of his works are still hardly known in the wider world. His second and greatest opera Ruslan and Ludmila was met with a less than favorable reception at its premiere in 1842, but this could be due to the rather confusing plot; although based on a tale by Alexander Pushkin, the narrative was created in fifteen minutes by the notoriously drunk poet Konstantin Bakhturin. The enduring popularity of the overture, however, exemplifies how successfully Glinka overrode such deficiencies. The revolutionary use of dissonance, oriental folk music and whole tone scales helps create a rollicking orchestral showpiece, now available to the most virtuosically ambitious of tuba-euphonium quartets.”
