Composer Alice Gomez says, “Highlife was commissioned, premiered and and recorded by international soloist Velvet Brown. It was conceived as a closing piece for concert performances with tuba and percussion. A catchy melody and a lively rhythm section of Afro-Cuban percussion characterize the composition. As the title suggests, this piece refers to the West African musical tradition called highlife.”
