Description

From the composer:

One afternoon in my studio (Saturday, November 15, 2014, to be precise), I experienced one of those cherished moments when, quite suddenly, there was a piece I knew I had to compose-the kind of piece that comes from a gentle spirit that taps you on the shoulder and asks, “Will you give me voice?”

A young friend and colleague, composer and clarinetist (and soon to be mom) Tiffany Jean Kunik, was entering her ninth month of pregnancy with her first child, Annabella, in her womb. I heard that while Tiffany was eagerly awaiting Annabella’s birth, she was understandably struggling, both physically and mentally, as she began the challenging remaining work of creating the moon and the stars.

Goodnight is a gentle lullaby that opens with the time-honored practice of soggetto cavato spelling out ‘Annabella’ (in which the letter n is represented by ‘sustain’). From the beginning to end, Goodnight sings a narrative of devotion, parental protection, hope for the future, and above all, love. Goodnight was commissioned by Annabella for her mother Tiffany to play for her in the month before she is born, and for many years to come.
