Description
El Guapo was commissioned by the Pacific Symphony Youth Orchestra and the Wind Band version soon followed. It is a happy dance featuring the rhythms and sounds of Latin America. Syncopations and montuno grooves showcase the percussion section throughout. After a forceful unison intro, the percussion set up the groove–punctuated by solo timpani and woodwind figures. The lighthearted main theme tune repeats several times gradually bringing in the entire band. The second section, in a samba-like feel, has jazzy figures in the winds and brass ending in a brief restatement of the main theme. The third part is a minor melody in the low instruments. Lots of fragmented duos and trios make up the development section followed by a return to the main theme—played triumphantly. The unison opening figure returns for a rousing ending. The premier was in May, 2014 by The Los Angeles Winds conducted by Steven Piazza. (Duration 4:20)
