Description
From the composer:
There are a few excellent horn quartets and numerous arrangements, and also a few works for larger groups, but not so many pieces for five horns. I wrote the Two Essays in November and December of 2014 to help enlarge the repertoire.
Each of the pieces is cast in a basically two-part form; a slow introductory section followed by a much faster one. The melodic language is chromatic, and the harmonic structures are triadic though not necessarily functional in the traditional sense. The musical material is distributed evenly among all five performers, with plenty of activity in each part.
