Description

Commissioned in 2002 by conductor Michael Gagliardo and the Etowah Youth Symphony Orchestra, Tribute commemorates the acts of valor and heroism shown by so many on September 11, 2001 and reflects on the shocked and confused response of a nation struggling to understand what had happened.

In addition to commemorating the events of 9/11, Tribute is especially well-suited for concerts celebrating other national holidays of commemoration, such as Veteran’s Day, Memorial Day, Presidents’ Day, Martin Luther King Day, Flag Day, and July 4. The music is ideally suited for upper-level youth orchestras, collegiate and university orchestras, and professional orchestras of all tiers.

James Grant writes:

“I composed Tribute while in residence at Copland House in Cortlandt Manor, NY, where one of America’s greatest composers, Aaron Copland, lived and worked the last thirty years of his life. The music was composed in his spacious glass-walled studio between March 23 and April 27, 2002. With gratitude to Copland House and as my own “tribute” to Mr. Copland, the composer’s initials A.C. are heard at the open and close of Tribute as major chords on A and C, played by the strings; and echoes of Mr. Copland’s Fanfare for the Common Man are used both rhythmically and melodically as structural motives throughout.”

Score includes CD of PDF parts.
