Description
The “Toccata and Fugue in G Minor” of J.S. Bach is perhaps best known from Disney’s 1940 film “Fantasia.” Originally an organ work, the piece has been adapted successfully for various large and chamber ensembles. The sound of a tuba quartet or ensemble is a good brass counterpart to the organ, with its rich sonorities and ringing overtones. The ensemble should strive for a unified sound throughout, bearing in mind the work’s solo origin.
Interestingly, many scholars believe the disjunct craftsmanship of “Toccata and Fugue” not to be J.S. Bach’s at all, but rather that of one of his sons, or an imitator.
