Description

One of the most famous pianists of all time and one of the last great Romantic composers, Sergei Rachmaninoff’s career rocketed off with early pieces such as the Prelude in C-sharp Minor. Composed when he was only 19, just after he graduated from the Moscow Conservatory, this piece gained almost immediate fame after its debut. Its popularity eventually grew to the point that audiences simply referred to it as “The Prelude”, despite the fact that Rachmaninoff composed many preludes. Although there is no true programmatic story behind it, many have added their own ideas to what the composer may be illustrating. The booming and serious tone of the work lends itself well to a tuba-euphonium ensemble, a change of key and a louder coda being the only major changes made in this arrangement.
