Description

Kerfuffles is a 5 minute high-energy piece for Solo Euphonium, Solo Tuba and Drums/Percussion.  It was written for a recording by Doug Tornquist and Arisa Makita. It is a challenging and fun romp in several sections–beginning with a medium-fast imitative part, followed by and even faster 5/4 section that slows down and segues to a really fast mixed-meter section where the solo tuba and euphonium trade melodic and harmonic lines. The final part is a brief da capo of the opening theme—ending on a big crescendo! The dictionary defines kerfuffle as “a commotion or fuss, especially one caused by conflicting views” –which describes my piece exactly! The premier was given at the University of Southern California, November, 18, 2024 at a Doug Tornquist Faculty Recital and played by Doug, Arisa and drummer Paul Kreibich.
