Description

Kent Eschelman was planning to record a CD of “Christian” Music with QuinTuba and asked me to write an arrangement of the old traditional jazz/hymn Just a Closer Walk. To be different, I decided to make it a medium Bossa Nova. It is fairly easy to play and can be played on any combinations of 5 Tubas and Euphoniums—and it works well with mass T/E Ensemble and maybe with a drummer playing a basic bossa beat. It is a 5 minute piece with several restatements of the theme. One interesting part is in the lowest tuba who needs to play long 3 octave descending lines. Lots of fun!

Jim Self is a Los Angeles free-lance musician, a veteran of thousands of motion pictures, television shows and records, and tuba soloist on many prominent movies. He is Principal Tubist with the Pasadena and Pacific Symphonies, the Hollywood Bowl Orchestra and the Los Angeles Opera and Opera Pacific orchestras. His compositions and arrangements include works for solo tuba, brass quintet, and other brass and woodwind chamber music.
