Description

First performance 1 February 1893, Torino (Teatro Regio)

The debut of Manon Lescaut on February 1, 1893, at the Teatro Regio in Turin marked Giacomo Puccini’s first genuine success. Among all the operas he composed, Manon Lescaut was the one that required the most time due to numerous problems. In this opera, Puccini experiments with and establishes the stylistic and dramatic characteristics that would ensure his future success: the importance of the female role, the depiction of a desperate love, and music that combines elements of both historical and geographical settings.
