Description
Pietro Tonassi borrows two melodies from Act 2, Scene 9 of Vincenzo Bellini’s opera Il Pirata to create his multi-thematic fantasy for clarinet and piano. For the majority of the work, the clarinet depicts the role of Gualtiero while the piano provides the orchestral accompaniment as heard in Bellini’s opera semiseria of 1827. The two arias are manipulated in creative and challenging ways throughout the introduction, Adagio cavatina, cadenza, theme and variations, finale and coda sections.
