Gabriel Sears

Gabriel Sears is quickly establishing himself as a leader among the new generation of brass musicians. Heralded by the United States Air Force Band as an “amazing talent” after being the first brass musician to win the Colonel George S. Howard Young Artist Competition, it was evident at an early age that Gabriel would set the new standard in tuba performance. Continuing with his competitive career, Gabriel has also won 2nd prize at the ’08 and ’09 Leonard Falcone International Tuba/Euphonium Artist Competition, and received a 2011-2012 Fulbright Grant to study tuba performance at the Hochschule für Musik, Theater, und Medien in Hannover, Germany with renowned tubist and educator Jens Bjørn-Larsen.

An avid chamber musician, Gabriel has served as principal tubist with the Southwest Brass Quintet, the Rural Street Klezmer Band, the ASU Dixie Devils, and the Omni Brass Ensemble, a project with trumpet virtuoso Randolph Lee. Gabriel has also enjoyed performance seasons with the Scottsdale Arts Orchestra, the West Valley Symphony, the MusicaNova Orchestra, a professional symphony dedicated to the performance of new music, the Salt River Brass Band, and as a pit orchestra musician in the professional touring Broadway musical Chicago during its January – February 2009 run in Phoenix, Arizona. Gabriel has also performed 4 solo recitals while attending Arizona State University.

While Gabriel maintained his high level of performance on tuba, he also pursued performance opportunities on both bass trombone and guitar. Gabriel was bass trombonist in the ASU Concert Jazz Band, ASU Jazz Repertory Band, ASU Sinfonietta, and in multiple concerts with The Salt River Brass. Gabriel also achieved recognition for his talents on guitar with the Arizona State University Sun Devil Marching Band for multiple seasons and performed on national television multiple times.

In addition to his performance activities, Gabriel is dedicated to arts education and has received a Bachelor of Music in Music Education from Arizona State University, graduating Magna Cum Laude, and has had several private students, one who recently participated in the Lamont Summer Music Academy on full scholarship in Denver, Colorado. Gabriel has been a student of brass giant Sam Pilafian, tuba virtuoso Patrick Sheridan, and Donna Schmidt, an Albuquerque, New Mexico area instructor.
